The numbers become even more astonishing when we compare them with the actual size of Earth. Imagine the planet as a gigantic apple. Humanity’s deepest mines would barely scratch the skin of that apple. The deepest mine ever dug, the Mponeng Gold Mine, reaches about 3.84 kilometers into the ground, yet Earth itself is 12,742 kilometers wide. Relative to the size of the planet, our deepest excavation is thinner than three sheets of paper placed on top of a one-meter ball.
The same comparison becomes even clearer when we think about area and volume. Between 2000 and 2017, all mining activity on Earth covered about 57,277 square kilometers. That sounds enormous until compared to Earth’s total surface area of 510 million square kilometers. All mines together occupy only about 0.011% of Earth’s surface. If Earth were shrunk to the size of a soccer field, every mine in the world combined would cover only the space of a small desk.
Volume tells an even more dramatic story. Suppose we assume an unusually deep average mine depth of 1 kilometer. Even then, the total volume of all mines would represent only 0.00000528% of Earth’s total volume. In simple terms, Earth is nearly 19 million times larger than all the mines humans have ever dug. If the entire planet were represented by an Olympic swimming pool, all human mining throughout history would equal less than half a cup of water removed from that pool.
This perspective helps explain why estimates of “running out” of resources are often misleading. Humanity’s civilization, cities, industries, and eight billion people currently depend on material extracted from what is effectively a microscopic scratch on the planet’s crust. We have explored only a tiny fraction of Earth’s accessible material. Just as a child could not judge how much chocolate is inside a giant cake by tasting a few crumbs from the corner, humanity cannot accurately estimate Earth’s total resources based only on the extremely small portions we have examined so far.
